Vacation Days

Ellie wearing her new Owl Hat from Aunt Maureen!
Keeping her ears nice and warm!

A shot of the sunset during our walk two evenings ago.

Our days off following Christmas have been a wonderful time to get some needed rest, take down Christmas and go outside!  Although it was near zero just before Christmas the end of the week has brought incredibly mild temps that have allowed a lot of time outdoors.

Ellie and I have taken full advantage by taking a walk every day!  Sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening and some days both!  She's quick to say yes when I ask if she wants to go, and has begun to ask when can we do our walk today.  I sure will miss having days off to get that mid-morning sunshine on our faces!

It's been a great time to talk about things - our upcoming vacation, our favorite things to do on days off and even a list of places we'd like to visit.  And the best part for me, is having her recognize how good she feels after a walk … the air, the tingle in her legs and the much improved mood from moving around and getting fresh air.  Wow!  Such a change!

Can't wait to evolve our walks so that we can continue during the week - should be fun!

Missing shots

Here's a few of the photos from the past few days that I didn't post .. but wanted to share them.  We're enjoying a few days off at Christmas to relax, play with our toys and get ready to kick off the new year in a few days!

Christmas Morning

Christmas morning!

Ellie's new puppy! Digger!

Digger came with this 'bone' in his mouth

Ellie's present to Mommy and Daddy
A cookbook from the 2nd grade classes
with contributions from ALL the students inside!

Just one of Ellie's two new bathrobes!  How exciting!

From Papa - her American Girl doll, Saige

From Aunt Maureen - modeling the Owl hat!

Yes, I do recall the days that Bill and I were awake before Ellie stirred from her bed.  Oh, how I wish that was the case now.  She was up and ready to head downstairs at 5am!  I convinced her to stay next to me for another 30 minutes - until she couldn't take it anymore!

She's spend the entire day going through all her wonderful gifts.  She received things from far and wide causing her to say, 'Wow, Mommy - lots of people DO love me.  Look at all the presents with my name on them!"

Christmas Eve

Bill & Jude - Christmas Eve 2013 at the Swan's house

Laura and Chris Swan - Christmas 2013

Brenda & Phil Morehead - Christmas Eve 2013

Emma, Ellie and Hannah - having fun!

Jude & Laura - Why, yes, we did have fun - thank you!

Bill and Phil - I know it rhymes, right?
Sharing a cocktail of Maple Crown Royal that neither one really liked!

We were delighted to enjoy an evening with friends to celebrate Christmas Eve on Tuesday!  All State Farm people who have relocated to Bloomington at some point in their careers.  Our hosts, Laura and Chris Swan (from Pennsylvania) actually live right in our neighborhood.  They have a teenage son Ethan, and a 10 year old daughter, Hannah - whom Ellie just loves!  Also included were Bill & Kristin Martin (from NY and NJ respectively) with whom we've gathered before.  And a new family to the mix for us was the Moreheads - Phil and Brenda with a 12 year old son Lucas and an 8 year old daughter, Emma. They're originally from Colorado, via a stop in Pennsylvania where they met the Swans and the Martins.

What a blessing to spend Christmas Eve with a group of wonderful families - the kids played great and the adults laughed until it was time to pack up and go home.  We dined on stuffed shells, meatballs, roasted veggies and ham.  And what a feast it was!

And as we were all bundling up, Kristin Martin said - hey let's do this again in January at our house!  So we quickly agreed on a weekend and look forward to getting together again soon.  What a wonderful way to spend a holiday!

Christmas concert!

As you can imagine the little cherubim sang beautifully at her Christmas concert on Thursday night~  We enjoyed the following songs:

Let it Snow!  Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
Mama, Bake the Johnnycake
Winter Fantasy
Home for the Holidays
Jingle Bell Rock
and
We Wish You a Merry Christmas!

Ellie was the happiest, most engaged singer I could see .. mind you I really didn't bother looking around much.  She was so excited to be going to the concert and you sure could see it on her face!  She had so much fun!

Holiday in the Atrium

Bill & I with State Farm Chairman, Ed Rust!

Each year at the State Farm Corporate HQ we are fortunate to have the Chairman, Ed Rust speak live at the Holiday in the Atrium event to summarize the  year's highlights and provide a message of Christmas cheer and wishes into the next year.

My first live viewing of this event was two years ago!  It was amazing to stand in the atrium and witness first-hand the filling of the chairs, stairs and every space in between with associates wanting to view Ed Rust give this address.  It's also filled with children's choirs, musical bands and lots of Christmas Carol singing.  Very festive and transmitted over our intranet for the whole Enterprise to view.

This year was Bill's first year seeing it live.  And he wanted to start it off with a memorable photo op.  And that he did.

Here's a shot of Ed with Bill and I.  What a great guy!

And then came the snow ...

It began on the drive home from work yesterday … the weatherman said from about 3pm until 6am this morning and 3-6 inches in the end.  And Mother Nature didn't let us down.  What a terrific time to get the snow, to clear the snow and to enjoy the snow!

This was the morning Bill and Ellie were headed out to do their traditional Christmas shopping, so they wanted out of the house early!  We bundled up to assess, shovel and snow blow all that the storm left behind.  Except it didn't stop at 6am .. it continued until nearly 10am!!

Just over six inches in total .. and it is just gorgeous!

Rosy-cheeked beauty!~

Shoveling her way to the front door!

"I just can't believe ALL this snow!"

Our new Yankee snowman … a player to be named later!

This was the measurement at 8am .. remember it didn't stop until 10am!
SO much snow!

Jingle, the Elf on the Shelf

As some of you may recall, our Elf on the Shelf is named Jingle.  He returned again this year on December 1st to grace our home. When he arrived he brought a letter with him to remind Ellie of his mission and of course, the rules!

He explained that a this year he wouldn't be causing all the mischief he had last year as she was older now.  He told her he thought she was old enough to understand all about Christmas Magic and how to spread it!  And wouldn't it be an amazing Christmas season this would be if all the second graders and up would help him spread the magic!

He left a note suggesting ways she could do that .. and encouraged her to find ways of her own as well.  With an ongoing list she's filling out, Jingle will read her list and bring that information back to Santa when he leaves at night.

*  Bring food to the food pantry
*  Hold the door open for someone with a smile'
*  Put change in the Salvation Army kettle
*  Bring unwanted toys to a place that kids without could use them
*  Donate hats & gloves so kids won't be cold this winter
*  Say 'hi' to someone new to make them feel welcome

I can say that Ellie is mentioning something every day that helps to spread the magic!  She's, of course, enjoying filling in her sheet as well!  In the meantime I've never seen someone get so excited to put change in the kettle each time we go to Kroger!

I'll keep you posted on Jingle's actions and Ellie's magic too!

25 Things I Want My Kids to Know about Christmas

CREDIT:  http://rachelmariemartin.blogspot.com

I read this awesome blog this morning about the 25 Things she wants her kids to know about Christmas and I really needed to 'borrow' it for here.  I'm thinking that next year I'll take each one and write them out on slips to be put in the Advent calendar with the 'prize' for Ellie.  They are terrific reminders about the season - and that #littlethingsmatter - which is the entire them to her Finding Joy blog.

Here they are:

1. In our house, Christmas is about Jesus. That first. The rest follows.
2. The stuff goes away. Relationships do not.
3. Always smile and at least thank the Bell Ringer at the store. Do not look away. Gather change beforehand to give.
4. Take time to slow down and appreciate the little things. #littlethingsmatter
5. Always say "thank you" to those working at the stores. And look them in the eye. And smile.
6. A handwritten note is always worth the effort.
7. Family matters. Take time to learn about family. To invest in family. To love.
8. Better to be less busy than to be crazy busy
9. The number of presents received does not matter.
10. Baking makes a mess. It also makes memories.
11. It's okay if the bottom of the tree is full of ornaments. Someday it will look perfect.
12. Christmas music should only be played after Thanksgiving until New Year's Day. (haha - my own silly rule.)
13. Traditions matter. Establish them. But always allow room for new traditions.
14. Even if life isn't perfect there still can be beautiful and joyful moments.
15. Give to others first. And giving back isn't just a December thing - make it a year long thing.
16. Sometimes the Christmas tree falls over. Fact. Just pick it up and try again.
17. Smile. Smile. Smile. And give others grace.
18. Cultivate and celebrate the spirit of wonder in little kids.
19. If other kids believe in Santa Claus and you don't - don't ruin it for them.
20. Always buy your wrapping paper after Christmas when it's 70% off at Target.
21. You won't get everything you want. Be grateful for what you are blessed to receive.
22. Write a Christmas list. Save your list. Someday you'll enjoy looking back at them.
23. Take time to listen to others and to learn their stories. So really, just slow down.
24. You can say "Merry Christmas" to others even if they just say "Happy Holidays" to you.
25. Be grateful. Be thankful. Love your family. And remember why you celebrate Christmas.

Celebrating Grammy's Birthday

Ellie and Grammy with birthday candles lit!
As tradition goes, when Papa and Grammy visit for Thanksgiving, we end the visit by celebrating Grammy's birthday early.  Today we had a homemade pasta and meatballs dinner followed by turtle cheesecake and presents.

As you can see there was much to celebrate!

Cookies and More ...

Cutting out the gingerbread men cookies!

All decorated!  What fancy cookies you have there, Ellie!

Today Papa and Bill went outside to put up the Christmas lights while the temperature hovered near 50 .. and again the girls stayed inside making treats!

Thanksgiving Weekend Activities

Making sweet treats

Pretzel, White Chocolate Hug and M&M top

Sampling a few to make sure they taste good!

Turtles - pretzel, Rolo candy and pecan half
While Papa and Bill did some driving around the town, the girls got busy in the kitchen making the candy with all the supplies Grammy brought with her.  Ellie was happier to sample the supplies than make the actual candy - but that's part of the fun!

Happy Thanksgiving!

In keeping with the Thanksgiving tradition, here is Sharon Randall's column about making this the best Thanksgiving ever!

"Thanks in the dining room and in the heart…

"We're having Thanksgiving dinner at home again this year, I guess I can't complain. Three turkeys in 28 years of marriage doesn't exactly make me a martyr.

The first time I hosted the annual family feeding frenzy was so long ago I can barely recall it now. Except when I hear a smoke alarm; then I recall it clear as a bell.

My family remembers it too, it seems, because since then we've had Thanksgiving dinner anywhere but here. However, last year things changed. Funny, isn't it? We like to think that family is a constant, a kind of rock that never changes. But even rocks can change, given enough time, enough pressure.

Families change too, over time and under pressure. They recreate themselves every day. A birth, a death, a marriage, a divorce, a move to a new city. The changes may be good or bad; makes no difference, really. What matter is what we do with them.

It's good to remember where we were and where we came from. But it's better to know who we are and where we're going. We need to talk less about how things used to be and more about how they are.

We did that last year, my husband and I and our three grown children. We took a long look at our family and decided that the traditions that had served us so well for so long no longer seemed to fit.

It had been a rugged year, dealing with a series of blows that struck us individually and as a family. My mother died. My father-in-law had to be placed in a rest home. And my husband had yet another surgery for cancer, only to be told a few months later that the disease had spread to his liver.

So when it came time to plan Thanksgiving dinner we took a family vote and I lost - four to one - meaning I had to stay home and cook. It wasn't bad, really. We invited some friends - who are like family, except they help - and I had no trouble with the turkey, after I figured out which end to stuff.

We all said, 'Best Thanksgiving ever." Nobody said, "best turkey ever," but I take compliments where I can get them. So we're doing it again this year. We invited the same friends and they accepted. I took that as a compliment, too. And my sister is coming from South Carolina. Her children are grown and if she stayed home they'd expect her to cook, she said. I'll wait until she gets off the plane to tell her my plan.

On Thanksgiving Day, while she wrestles with the turkey I will set two tables - one in the dining room and one in my heart. And I will serve, in fact or spirit, all the people I've known and loved. No, I won't be feeding them, but I will be thankful for them. It will be my best Thanksgiving ever. Because now is the only one I've got.

Who can say what another year will bring? I wish you your best Thanksgiving ever. It's the only one that counts."

Anticipation ...

Trying on glasses - with an attitude!

Frosted Snowman Cookie at Starbucks

As this coming week is the week of Thanksgiving, we have lots to get done in anticipation of Grammy and Papa arriving on Wednesday!  Some of that is organizing, some of that is shopping, and some is just getting those errands done that we'd normally get done on a Saturday!

So as you can see Ellie loves to go to the eyeglass place … and, no, she doesn't need glasses, and isn't getting any.  Bill and I both had Medical Reimbursement money left in our account to use before the end of the year so new glasses we got!

And while Bill was waiting for his, Ellie and I slipped next door to Starbucks to enjoy a gift card I found in an old purse!  Bonus!  She got a snowman cookie and I got a Caramel Brûlée Latte…. to share of course … with Bill when we got back to the glasses place.

Her own salad with greens, pears, Craisins, parmesan and carrots!
So the shopping is done .. mostly .. the rooms are ready .. and the house is groomed in anticipation of their arrival.  There has been finishing touches put on the basement, and serving pieces unearthed from far away hiding places.  There is a full fridge and freezer ready to begin the Thanksgiving visit as well.

We have a couple of crafting and baking adventures for Ellie and Grammy, while Papa catches up with Bill in the Man Cave basement.  Oh, the fun we'll have …..

What a difference a day makes

What was considered quarter-size hail from our front yard which fell during the storms.

Living in the midwest, we accept the threat of severe weather as a matter of geographic location.  We've been fortunate in our 2 1/2 years that we've never experienced a real tornado threat - until now.

Today that all changed.

We had returned from church and groceries when Bill announced he was making a trip to Best Buy and Ellie decided to go with him.  That worked for me as I was planning to get to work on putting a pork tenderloin in the crock pot and getting the sweet potatoes ready to roast.

And then the rain and wind began.

Bill quickly changed his mind, closed the garage door and said, "I think we'll wait out the storm here."

Boy, am I glad they did.

We grabbed our phones and Ellie's iPad and headed to the basement.  The wind howled, the rain came down sideways and the hail was pinging the windows.  My storm alert kept chirping on my phone to make me aware of the impended threat.

It hadn't changed from a warning to a watch before.  Until today.

The power went out.  Cell phones ceased to work,  unable to find a tower with strength.

And about 20 minutes later we came upstairs to survey the damages.  Chairs and tables had been blown around lawns, the basketball hoop was down across the street, and part of our backyard fence blew over.  But other than that, we were in tact.

And very grateful.

As soon as we saw pictures of our neighbors just a few towns over in Pekin and Washington, IL we said quiet prayers for them - for their safety and their recovery.

We're together as a family, the power is restored, the pork went into the oven instead of the crockpot.  Life resumed as normal.  But tonight's dinner blessing will go out to those who didn't endure the storm as well as we did here.

And a good time was had by all ...

From the top left
Salted Caramel, Pumpkin Spice, Happy Birthday, Red Velvet
S'mores and in the center - Chocolate Chocolate!

Tonight for dinner we had company … which is somewhat rare here in Bloomington … and yet it's always a time to celebrate!

One of neighbors and a co-worker of Bill's, Laura and her 4th grade daughter, Hannah were in the midst of having a girls weekend with Chris and Ethan at Boy Scout Camp overnight.  We invited them for dinner so the girls had time to play and we could all catch up!

It was simple really - burgers and mac n cheese - the good kind, that's homemade with bacon, garlic and thyme.  And they thoughtfully brought Sugar Mama Cupcakes for dessert.

The girls had so much fun enjoying Ellie's space in the basement - each taking a side on the easel and drawing, playing bean bag toss, figuring out the Crazy Loom for bracelets … and answering questions from Hannah's Mad Libs-type book.

It was so amazing to see them get along so well.  Unlike other 'play dates' Ellie has had, this was just two friends who enjoyed being together.  They giggled, and sang the same songs - and when they packed up to go home Ellie waved from the doorway!  She turned to me and said, "Mommy, Hannah is my best friend!  I have so much fun with her!"

At that moment I said a little prayer that she continues to find people in her life that fill her up.  Once that make her sorry it's over at the end of the day, and fill her with anticipation for the next time they will be together.  She is now understanding the true meaning of friendship - and I'm so glad Hannah is one of those friends!

Weekend Adventures

Ellie and Sock Monkey at the Christmas Tree at Kroger!!

Trying on a beret at J C Penney - she sure does love things sparkly!

After yesterday's taste test of Egg Nog, I should have known the rest of the weekend would be filled with funny - only Ellie would appreciate!

She and I spent lots of time cleaning and rearranging her room and her play area in the basement.  It was time to weed through the old, and sort items into either a keep, give-away or trash pile.  It was great to show her that toys and books that she has 'outgrown' will find a new home with a child younger and appreciative of them.

And the awesome part is she keeps saying how much she loves things so organized.  That must be her father in her!  It has left lots of opportunity to use things she hasn't seen in a while … and perhaps a couple of empty spaces for more age-appropriate Christmas gifts!

She also went with me on several errands.  We were at the mall for a quick stop yesterday, the library and today was two grocery stores.  From the photo you can see she loves to have fun no matter where she goes.

The weekend is winding down with our traditional Sunday afternoon meal of homemade pasta with shrimp scampi!  She really wanted a second bowl of pasta, but was afraid she wouldn't have room for apple pie later.  Smart girl, huh?

Sharing

I love the fact that I get to see Ellie experience things for the first time.  Sometimes they are huge things - like first day at school, singing on stage, riding her bike with no training wheels - and other times they are small, one might think insignificant events.

When it comes to Ellie, nothing is insignificant.  She loves.  She loves signing, she loves eating, she loves laughing … So today's 'first time' event was her trying egg nog.  I know, not a big deal.  But it really was.

I found the local Kroger is stocking Hood Egg Nog, and was thrilled to bring home a quart of a new flavor to share with the family.  Caramel Egg Nog just could not disappoint.  So today I poured '3 fingers' worth in a glass for the family to share … picture us rationing something really good!

Well, she loved it.  In fact even after the fact, when she and I were off to do errands she was still talking about it.

"What was that again, Mommy?'

"Its called Egg Nog.  And it's made by a company Daddy used to work for."

"You mean Daddy can make EGG NOG?"

"No, I said he worked there, he didn't make the egg nog."

"Mommy, when we get home and we have some more?"

Oh dear, just like crab legs, sushi and cannolis, this girl has rich taste!

The Great Pumpkin and more ...

Ready to make bracelets

You may recall that here in Bloomington, The Great Pumpkin arrives the night after Halloween to pick up all the candy from Trick of Treating the night before.  Well, minus the 10 favorite pieces which are put aside.

The Great Pumpkin takes the rest of the candy and distributes to all the kids who were unable to Trick or Treat on Halloween.  Maybe they were sick, hurt or in the hospital.  Not to worry, they get to share in the candy too!

And in exchange the child receives a toy for their effort.  This year Ellie received cash in exchange for her candy!  Two $5 bills were left behind by the Great Pumpkin!

So Ellie combined that money with the money from Aunt Lisa and went to Toys r Us to pick out a special prize!  And since Ellie has been wanting Crazy Loom for quite awhile, today was the day!  She was thrilled to spend the end of a gift card and the cash, all in exchange for a Crazy Loom!

She will likely have the refill rubber bands on her Christmas List, she's already told me! Oh yeah, and Hungry, Hungry Hippo which was her second choice at the Toys R Us today!
